Strong Relief Effort by Ferris Helps Bentley Best Stonehill, 3-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore lefty Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) provided 4.1 innings of scoreless relief to help Bentley University to a 3-2 win over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball at Bentley Thursday afternoon.

Bentley, the designated road team since the game had been scheduled to be played at Stonehill, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Senior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS) had a two-run single to right and scored on a sun-aided double to center by senior third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS).

The Falcons added to their lead with two more runs in the third. Freshman right fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) led off with an infield single and was sacrificed to second. Following a fly out, sophomore shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) singled to center, driving in Kennedy.

After Borrelli advanced to second on the throw, she scored on a bloop single just past the second-base bag by senior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS).

After three of Stonehill's first five hitters in the bottom of the third reached, with one scoring, Ferris was brought in to pitch. She gave up an RBI single to sophomore designated player Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn.) on her first pitch, but struck out the next hitter to end the inning.

Ferris, who lowered her ERA to 1.75 while recording her third win, pitched out of trouble in the fourth and fifth innings before retiring six of seven over the last two innings. Stonehill, which had won eight of its previous nine, had runners on the corners with no outs in the fourth and two on with no out in the fifth.

Bentley (10-11, 2-3 NE-10 Northeast) outhit the Skyhawks (13-13, 5-1 NE-10 Northeast) 6-5 with Kennedy finishing two for four.

Freshman Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y.) took the loss for Stonehill, dropping her season record to 5-2, despite striking out nine.

Bentley will begin a weekend home series with Franklin Pierce University with a single game Friday at 4 pm. The series will continue with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
