Le Moyne Sweeps Past Bentley with a Pair of 2-Hitters

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y.) pitched a two-hitter in the opener and senior Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y.) followed with a two-hit shutout in the second game as Le Moyne College swept Bentley University, 6-1 and 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference non-divisional softball Sunday afternoon at Bentley.

Both hits allowed by Claflin came off the bat of senior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/ Braintree HS). She tripled and scored in the fifth and had a single in the seventh inning.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, an inning that saw both freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y.) and sophomore Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del.) triple and score.

Le Moyne added to its lead with single runs in each of the next three innings. Case had an RBI single in the fourth, sophomore left fielder Alison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y.) doubled and scored in the fifth, and freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y.) had an RBI single in the sixth.

Harrison struck out ten in the nightcap, pushing her career total to 931. She retired the final 14 batters she faced after allowing four base runners in the first three innings, including singles by senior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS) and senior right fielder Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl C. Vandermeulen HS).

The game's only run was scored in the fifth and Harrison got things started with a one-out single to right. After a hit batter, pinch-hitter Mackenzie Dreher (Hinckley, Ohio) singled to left, scoring pinch-runner Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y.) from second.

That run spoiled a quality effort by Bentley freshman Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS), who finished with a three-hitter. She walked two and struck out four.

With the two losses, Bentley slipped under .500 to 9-11 (3-7 Northeast-10). Le Moyne, on the other hand, improved to 13-9 overall and 6-2 against conference foes.

Bentley is scheduled to play a single game at Merrimack Tuesday at 3 pm.
