Stonehill Strikes Early Twice to Sweep Bentley, 6-3 and 5-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – A five-run first in the opener and a three-run second in the nightcap were more than enough to propel Stonehill College to a doubleheader sweep of Bentley University, 6-3 and 5-2, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Thursday afternoon at Bentley.

All six runs scored by the Skyhawks in the opener came after two were out. In the big first inning, sophomore pitcher Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn.) got her team on the board, driving in two with a bases-loaded single down the left field line. Freshman left fielder Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y.) followed with a single, and an errant throw on a pick-off attempt allowed Ruonavarra to score from second with Stonehill's fourth run. After an infield hit, Carbone stole home on the front end of a double steal to make it a 5-0 game.

Bentley got two runs back in the second on a two-run triple to center by senior third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS).

The Falcons' other run in the opener came in the sixth on an RBI triple to left by junior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS). Gauthier had two hits in the game as did junior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS).

Both bullpens excelled with freshman Cassandra Squeri (New Providence, N.J.) earning the win for Stonehill after giving up only one hit in five innings of work. Michelle DeVito (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore HS) struck out three in three perfect innings for the Falcons.

Game two featured Carbone, who helped Stonehill (9-11, 4-0 Northeast) to the victory with both her bat and right arm. She had a two-run double and scored a third run in the second inning, and restored the Skyhawk lead to three with an RBI triple in the fifth.

As a pitcher, she improved to 4-1 after scattering six hits and striking out four in a complete game effort.

Senior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS) and senior right fielder Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl C. Vandermeulen HS) each had RBI singles for Bentley. Sophomore lefty Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) pitched well in relief, allowing four hits and one run in four innings. She struck out four.

The Falcons, 8-8 overall and 1-3 Northeast-10, will continue the homestand with doubleheaders against The College of Saint Rose Saturday and Le Moyne College Sunday. First pitch both days are scheduled for 12 noon.
