CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman lefty Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) pitched a four-hitter in the opener and classmate ( Michelle DeVito (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore HS) followed with a two-hit shutout as the Bentley University softball team won a pair of games Friday to complete its ten-game Florida trip with a five-game winning streak and a 6-4 record.

Smith pitched Bentley past Northwood University (Mich.), 3-1, and the DeVito's shutout came in a 3-0 decision over New York Institute of Technology. Both contests were played at the National Training Center.

Smith (2-0) retired 17 of the last 18 batters she faced after surrendering a second-inning run that evened the score at 1-1 at the time. She finished with six strikeouts and walked only one.

DeVito, 1-1 on the season, struck out four and issued one walk. She gave up a leadoff single in the first and a two-out single in the fifth, and faced only two batters over the limit.

Smith also led off the fourth with a double and scored Bentley's third run on another Connor single.

In addition to Smith and Connor, Bentley also received two hits from senior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS).

Against NYIT, Bentley picked up single runs in each of the final three innings. In the fifth, sophomore Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS) drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sacrifice and scored on Connor's third RBI single of the day.

Gauthier scored an unearned run in the sixth and Bentley squeezed in an insurance run in the seventh, freshman Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) scoring on a successful bunt by senior right fielder Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen HS).

Sophomore catcher Jill Raia (Montville, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) had two of Bentley's seven hits.
