Connor, Vena Help Bentley Top Nyack, 7-2; Falcons Fall to #16 WV Wesleyan in 2nd Game

CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) and freshman right fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) combined for four hits, three runs and three RBI as the Bentley University softball team won its first game of the season, 7-2 over Nyack College in non-conference action at the National Training Center Monday afternoon.

In Bentley's second game of the day, the Falcons dropped a 3-1 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan College, the 15th-ranked team in Division II. The Bobcats were led  by senior Jessica Griffin (Cooper City, Fla.), who pitched a three-hitter, struck out seven and was involved in all three of her team's runs (two RBI, one scored).

In the Nyack game, Bentley extended a one-run lead to 4-1 with two runs in the fourth. Vena drove in the first with a single to left and grad student Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) followed with another RBI single in the same direction.

The Falcons pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Vena and sophomore shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) each had RBI singles in the inning and Vena scored the third run on an error, the fifth unearned run of the game allowed by Nyack.

Connor finished two-for-four with two runs and one RBI, and Vena was two-for-three with two RBI and one scored.

Freshman Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) pitched the first four innings to earn her first career win and sophomore Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) picked up the save following three innings of scoreless relief.

Bentley, 1-4 thus far on the ten-game trip, will play a 9 am game against West Liberty University Tuesday morning.
