Bentley Falls to Mercy & Tiffin During Day 2 of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Day two of the Bentley University softball team's trip to the National Training Center saw the Falcons drop a pair on Sunday, 4-1 to Mercy College in the morning game and 4-0 to Tiffin University in the second game of the day.

Bentley's only run of the day came in the sixth inning against the Mavericks. Freshman designated player Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a grounder to third by sophomore shortstop Alex Borelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS).

The Mavericks, who were playing their first game of 2014, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first and added to their advantage with two in the third and one in the fifth. That was more than enough as senior Mary Sieber (Massapequa Park, N.Y. and freshman Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn.) combined on a five-hitter.

Senior first baseman Kelly Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) powered the Mercy offense with a two-run homer, a double and a single. Vena had two hits for the Falcons.

Tiffin improved to 5-2 as freshman Taylor Spang (Warsaw, Ohio) and junior Madison Yanek (North Lima, Ohio) combined on a one-hitter. That came in the fifth when senior first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham HS) singled to left.

Senior first baseman Caitlin Houk (Heath, Ohio) and junior left fielder Tamara Link (Petaluma, Calif.) each drove in two runs for the Dragons.

Bentley, 0-3, will seek its first wins of the season Monday with games against Nyack University (11 am) and West Virginia Wesleyan (1 pm).
