4 Hits by Connor Not Enough as Bentley Swept by Stonehill, 3-2 and 5-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University sophomore left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) had two hits in each game, raising her batting average to a team-best .306, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons were swept by Stonehill College in a college softball doubleheader, 3-2 and 5-1, Thursday afternoon at Bentley.

The first game completed a three-game Northeast-10 Conference season series between the two programs, with Stonehill taking two of three, and the nightcap was considered non-conference.

For Stonehill, freshmen Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn.) each pitched complete game five-hitters, with Ruonovarra extending her personal winning streak to seven games. She struck out six and walked one, and Esposito finished with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game one saw the Skyhawks (15-14, 5-1 NE-10 Northeast) take a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Senior designated player Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater) was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Ruonovarra and scored on a single to right by junior first baseman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y.). Two more singles and a mishandled ball in center allowed McKillop to score Stonehill's second run.

An RBI single by Eisenmann in the fifth gave Stonehill its second unearned run of the game and a 3-0 lead.

Bentley scored both its runs in the sixth with a single to left by Connor getting things started. Senior catcher Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker HS) followed with an RBI double, and she scored on a two-out triple to left by junior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/Braintree HS).

Stonehill pounded out ten hits in the second game, including two apiece by the first three hitters in the lineup: freshman second baseman Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H.), senior catcher Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn.) and Eisenmann.

Eisenmann doubled in a run and scored another during a three-run third and also singled and scored during a two-run fourth that made it a 5-0 game.

As was the case in the opener, Bentley only scored in the sixth inning. Connor led off with a triple to right and scored on a Thibodeau single.

Bentley, 5-15 overall and 1-4 NE-10 Northeast, will continue a ten-game homestand with weekend doubleheaders against American International (Saturday, 12 noon) and Assumption (Sunday, 12 noon).
