Saint Anselm Holds Bentley to 1 Run in Doubleheader Sweep

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore right-hander Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener and classmate Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.), a lefty, followed with a two-hitter in the nightcap as Saint Anselm College swept Bentley University, 4-0 and 3-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

The Hawks (5-11, 2-0 NE-10 NE) gave Trask the only run she would need in the third inning. Sophomore right fielder Hayley Lombard (Coral Springs, Fla.) led off with a triple to left and scored on a grounder by senior catcher Lauren Galavotti (Marion).

Saint Anselm made it 2-0 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Heather Byrne (Lynn) and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI triple by Galavotti and a sacrifice fly by junior designated player Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.).

Trask finished with one walk and six strikeouts. Freshman Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) turned in a complete game for Bentley, with three of the four runs she allowed unearned.

The Hawks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, both coming in on a two-run single to center by junior Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.). Those proved to be enough as Cormier gave up only two singles, both to sophomore left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS).

Bentley's only run of the day came in the sixth inning when pinch-runner Natalie Tarantino (Arlington/Arlington HS) scored on a passed ball after a Conner single moved her to third.

Bentley, 5-13 overall and 1-3 NE-10 NE), will continue an 11-game homestand Tuesday with a single game against Merrimack College (3 pm).
