Steiner One-Hitter Propels Saint Leo to 7-0 Win over Bentley

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior lefty Sarah Steiner (Sanford, Fla.) authored a one-hit shutout as Saint Leo University topped Bentley University, 7-0, in non-conference college softball Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center.

Saint Leo, whose season started back on Feb. 2, improved to 20-8 while Bentley, just four days into the game portion of its season, dropped to 2-4.

The Lions gave Steiner a three-run lead before she threw her first pitch of the contest. Sophomore center fielder McKenzie Burns (Brooksville, Fla.) led off with a single through the left side, stole second and third, and scored on a single through the left side by senior third baseman Rachelle Gremo (Genoa City, Wisc.).

Later in the first, junior shortstop Brittany Ewing (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had an RBI double and sophomore first baseman Kelsey LaNeave (Winter Green, Fla.) picked up an RBI on a ground out.

Saint Leo added to its lead with single runs during the next four innings. Burns had an infield single for an RBI in the second, LaNeave scored on a wild pitch in the third, the Lions picked up an unearned run in the fourth and they manufactured a run in the fifth.

Saint Leo finished with 11 hits, including three by Steiner and sophomore center fielder Angela Kafalas (Tampa, Fla.).

Bentley's only hit came in the first inning, a lead-off bunt by junior center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS).

Following a day off Wednesday, Bentley will return to action Thursday with games against Sioux Falls and Bemidji State.
