Georgian Court Rallies Late to Spoil Bentley’s Season-Opener, 4-3

CLERMONT, Fla. – Bentley University freshman shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) had two hits and two RBI in her collegiate debut, but Georgian Court University scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to edge the Falcons, 4-3, in non-conference women's college softball Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center.

Borelli opened the second with a double to right center, took third on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score Bentley's first run of 2013 on an error.

After the Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the second, Bentley struck for two after two were out in the third. Sophomore designated player Alyssa Wagner (Suffield, Conn./Suffield HS) had an infield single and senior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree/Braintree HS) reached on an error, with Wagner moving to third. After a wild pitch, Borelli singled to right, scoring both for a 3-1 lead.

Lead-off doubles by freshman catcher Meghan Sfrage (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) in the fourth and junior second baseman Justine Mattia (Williamstown, N.J.) in the fifth each led to Georgian Court runs, tying the game at 3-3.

Bentley threatened in the sixth with McDonough leading off with a double to right. However, junior Kristina Morgan (Audubon, N.J.), who pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief for GCU, retired the next three Falcons in order, preserving the tie.

Georgian Court grabbed the lead in the bottom of sixth, staging a two-out rally. Sophomore center fielder Dara Schroeder (Bordentown, N.J.) bunted for a single, stole second and scored on an outfield error.

Georgian Court, which was playing its 12th game of the season, outhit the Falcons 11-5 with Schroeder one of three Lions to have two hits.

Bentley will continue its trip to Florida with games against Bridgeport (11 am) and Alderson-Broaddus (3 pm) Sunday.
