Habib, Dolan Pitch AIC to Doubleheader Sweep of Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Elizabeth Habib (Methuen) pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener and junior Kristen Dolan (Norwood) followed with a five-inning no-hitter as American International College took a pair from Bentley University, 4-0 and 12-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bentley.

Habib, who retired 13 in a row at one stretch, allowed only one Bentley runner to reach third base and that came with two outs in the seventh. She walked one and struck out nine while recording her team's first shutout of 2011.

Dolan also struck out nine and walked one as she became the second pitcher in as many days to toss a five-inning no-hitter against Bentley, following Assumption's Chelsea Durso.

In game one, AIC picked up single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to open a 2-0 lead. Sophomore right fielder Laura Rousseau (Chicopee) had a sacrifice fly for the first run and picked up another RBI with a sixth-inning ground out.

A two-run, two-out single by freshman designated player Katie Merrill (Queensbury, N.Y.) in the seventh provided the Yellow Jackets with some insurance.

For Bentley, sophomore right fielder Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker HS) had two of her team's three hits and junior pitcher Tara Fogarty (Chester, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic HS) broke the career strikeout record with her only K of the game. That second inning punchout was the 227th of her career, one more than the record of 226 (Lara Morgillo, 1989-91) that she tied Saturday.

In the nightcap, AIC staked Dolan to a five-run lead before she stepped in the center circle. The big first inning featured three consecutive triples, by junior first baseman Sarah Calgreen (Stratford, Conn.), sophomore catcher Stephanie Belanger (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior center fielder Ashleigh St. Peter (Gill).

AIC put another five-run inning up in the third, with the big blow being a three-run double by freshman shortstop Haley Marchand (Swansea). She was 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI in the nightcap.

Bentley scored its only run of the day in the bottom of the first. Junior catcher Megan Blier (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a ground out and a passed ball, and scored on a dropped fly ball.

The sweep boosted AIC to 11-15 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast-10. Bentley, which opened the season with a 7-3 Florida trip, dropped to 9-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Bentley will conclude a ten-game homestand Monday with a 3 pm doubleheader against Franklin Pierce.
