Powell Top Runner for Bentley Men at Shacklette Invitational

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Sam Powell (Granby, Mass./Holyoke Catholic HS) was the top finisher for the Bentley University men's cross country team during Saturday's season-opening 31st-annual Shacklette Invitational at Saint Anselm College.

Powell, whose sister Barb ran for the Bentley women's team from 2006-09, was 13th overall with a time of 28:35.3 for 8,000 meters. Classmate Tom Dean (Portland, Maine/Deering HS) was also in the top 20 for the Falcons, finishing 19th in his collegiate debut in 29:15.1.

The rest of Bentley's top five in the meet were junior Tom Quentin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and freshmen Chris Haddad (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield HS) and Sean Perry (Portland, Maine/Deering HS). They were 28th, 30th and 31st, respectively, with times of 30:15.5,30:23.0 and 30:49.6.

Bentley, which did not run its expected top seven runners, finished fourth of seven in the team standings with a total of 113 points. Stonehill College cruised to victory with 19 points, the Skyhawks having seven of the top ten finishers. Merrimack took second with 51, and Assumption was third with 74.

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the UMass-Dartmouth Shriners' Invitational.
