Hergott Runs to Victory During Poyau Memorial

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University senior Dan Hergott (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier HS) accounted for the only victory earned by the Falcon men's track and field team during the Reggie Poyau Memorial at Brandeis University Saturday.

Hergott finished the 3,000 meters in 8:58.74, reaching the line 5.1 seconds ahead of Nick Harriman of Southern Maine.

Senior Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS) also scored for the Falcons in the 3,000 as his 9:05.05 was good for third place.

Bentley also had two of the top three finishers in the shot put with senior Michael Carpino (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) second with a throw of 43'11.75" and junior J.T. Brine (Blue Point, N.Y./ Bayport-Blue Point HS) third with a 42'8.25". Carpino's effort was a personal best by more than three feet and moved him to number ten on the program's all-time performance list.

In the mile, the Falcons had three of the top seven with that effort led by junior Michael Cannata (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) taking third in 4:38.28. Freshman Derek Pittorino (Westborough/Westborough HS) followed in fourth (4:41.15) and sophomore Soham Basu (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood HS) was seventh (4:49.00).

Junior Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) captured third in the 400 meters (52.66) and senior Ryan Kenney (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush Henrietta Sperry HS) was fourth in the 200 (23.95).

Sophomore Brian Shevlin (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade HS) twice set a new personal best while finishing fourth in the 60 in 7.28 seconds. Also in the 60, junior Alex Arnold (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was sixth in 7.38 after qualifying in 7.30.

Bentley finished fourth of nine in the team standings with the Falcons total of 61 bettered by Southern Maine (158), Brandeis (107) and Merrimack (68).

This week's action has the Falcons competing in the Joe Donohue Invitational Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center and the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational next Sunday at Harvard.
