Murphy Opens Indoor Season with Win in 5,000 Meters

BOSTON, Mass. – The 2018-19 Bentley University men's indoor track and field season got underway Saturday with senior Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS) turning in a winning performance during the UMass-Boston Open at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Murphy's win came in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:37.96. That was nearly three seconds faster than Adam Janik of the Brown Running Club. Also in the 5,000, junior Thomas Abraham (Lowell/ Lowell) was 13th of 53 in 16:04.84, a personal best by 1.16 seconds.

Senior Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) was fourth of 28 in the 500 (1:09.01) and in the same event, freshman Joe Wix (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial HS) was seventh (1:10.00).

Wix and Gettings also helped Bentley finish fourth of 25 in the 4x400 relay with the quartet also including freshman Jesse Blow (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) and Devin Wendel (Westfield, N.J./Westfield HS).

Sophomore Anthony Catino (North Reading/North Reading HS) was eighth in the 60 hurdles after qualifying with a 8.93 in the trials.

In the mile. Junior Michael Cannata (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) and freshman Derek Pittorino (Westborough/Westborough HS) were seventh and eighth with times of 4:35.91 and 4:36.93, respectively.

Another top ten finish was achieved by freshman Folajimi Olutiola (Old Tappen, N.J./ Englewood HS), who was ninth of 23 in the high jump (6'0.75").

The next meet for Bentley is 12 days into the new year, the Reggie Poyau Memorial at Brandeis University.
