WALTHAM, Mass. – With former champion Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) and record-setting junior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) among the favorites, the Bentley University Falcons will be at Southern Connecticut State University Friday and Saturday for the 2018 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Mattson, whose name is attached to 13 school records (five outdoor, eight indoor), is the number one qualifier in the 400 meters with a time of 56.74 seconds, the second best posted in the East Region this season. She was fourth in the 400 a year ago and also at the NE10 indoor championships in February.

Mattson is also the number two qualifier in the long jump (5.70m) and has the number five seed in the 200 (25.58). She was the runner-up in the long jump indoors after placing fourth a year ago outdoors.

Sihvonen, a senior who was named the Northeast-10 Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Thursday for the fourth time this spring, will be looking to reclaim the conference's javelin championship that eluded him last year when he finished third. The 2017 NE10 Men's Field Athlete of the Year was the NE10 champion in 2016 after taking second place three years ago as a freshman. Sihvonen's qualifying distance of 62.68m is more than three meters beyond the mark turned in by Southern Connecticut's Gueber Docteur, number two on the entry list.

Senior Seamus Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) is the number one seed in the 5000, his time of 14:58.07 about four-and-a-half seconds better that the number two qualifier, Franklin Pierce's Jeff Reddy.

Sophomore Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) finished second in the 400 hurdles a year ago and is the number four seed this time around with a 55.21. Also fourth is senior Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./ Sunapee HS) in the 800 at 1:52.19.

Other Falcons who'll be looking to place include senior Beau Kraft (Bayport, N.Y/Bayport-Blue Point HS) in the shot and discus, sophomore J.T. Brine (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) in the discus and junior Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS) in the 10,000. Last year, Kraft was fifth in the shot and seventh in the discus, Brine was fifth in the discus, and Murphy was ninth in the 10K.

A pre-meet poll of conference coaches forecast the Bentley men to place ninth of 11 and the Falcon women to finish tenth among 12 squads.
