Higgins, Sihvonen Turn in Winning Performances at Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational

 

EASTON, Mass. – Senior Seamus Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and junior All-America Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) posted victories for the Bentley University men's track and field team during the Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational Saturday at W.B. Mason Stadium.

Higgins took first in the 1500 meters for the second straight meet with his 3:59.86 nearly a second better than runner-up Kevin Wheelock of Stonehill and an  improvement of 4.48 seconds over the personal best he established a week earlier during the Sean Collier Invitational at MIT. The victory was his second of the season and third of his career.

Sihvonen achieved his 13th career first-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 201 feet, 11 inches. Currently number 17 on the NCAA Division II performance list, he finished 26 feet ahead of the second-place finisher, Kevin Russo of Merrimack. Also in the javelin, freshman Peter Maselli (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) was ninth of 24 with a distance of 161'6".

Sophomore Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) qualified for the New Englands and climbed to fourth on the Northeast-10 performance list in the 400 meters by finishing second in 55.21 seconds.

Sophomore Alex Arnold (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) scored in four events, including a fourth in the long jump with his 22'0.75" leap an improvement on his previous best by nearly four inches. It lifted him to seventh on Bentley's all-time list and to ninth on the NE10 list.

Arnold was also fifth of 40 in the 100 (11.24), eighth of 41 in the 200 (23.04) and a member of the Falcons' 4x100 relay that finished fifth with the conference's seventh best time of the season (43.62).

Senior Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) came close to provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships in the 800, missing by only three-hundredths of a second with a 1:51.19. That was a PR by more than a second and was good for third among 34.

In the 5,000, junior Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS) finished second of 13 with his 15:40.50 improving on his previous best by 3.69 seconds. Sophomore Thomas Abraham (Lowell/ Lowell HS) improved on his PR by seven seconds and was sixth in 16:21.42, and sophomore Ben Edwards (Morristown, N.J./Morristown HS) was seventh (16:21.50).

Senior Beau Kraft (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS), junior Michael Carpino (Mansfield/ Mansfield HS) and sophomore J.T. Brine (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) led Bentley in the shot and discus. In the latter, Kraft took second (130'4"), Brine was fifth (119'9") and Carpino eighth (110'9"). Kraft also led the Falcons in the shot, finishing eighth with a throw of 42'9.75". Carpino set a PR while placing tenth in 41'1.75" and Brine was 15th (37'5").

As a team, Bentley was fifth among ten teams with 86 points. Stonehill captured its tenth straight Skyhawk title with 155, and also finishing ahead of the Falcons were Assumption (108), Holy Crosse (97) and Bryant (95).

Next up for the Falcons is the Northeast-10 Championships Friday and Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University.
