Sihvonen Debuts by Provisionally Qualifying for NCAA Championships

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bentley University All-America Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) opened his senior year by meeting the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard in the javelin during the Black and Gold Invitational Saturday at Bryant University.

Sihvonen threw the javelin 205 feet, 8 inches to finish third among 28 competitors. Jordan Entwhistle of UMass-Dartmouth took first in 217'8" and Rhode Island's Greg McManus followed in 214'8". Sihvonen's effort put him 11th on the Division II performance list so far this season.

Also in the javelin, junior Anthony Giesing (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow HS) improved on his personal best by nearly three feet and finished 12th with a 171'5".

Sophomore Alex Arnold (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) moved to the top of the Northeast-10 performance list in the long jump by clearing 20'11.25" in the long jump. He was fifth overall, trailing a quartet of Division I student-athletes. Arnold was also 10th of 47 in the 200 meters, his time of 22.97 seconds a PR by 0.63 seconds and third best in the NE10 thus far.

Senior Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) and sophomore Josh Gettings (Lowell, Mass./ Lowell HS) both turned in times that rank second on the early-season NE10 performance list. Skarin was sixth of 25 in the 800 meters (1:57.44) and Gettings seventh of 20 in the 400 hurdles (57.08).

Gettings and Arnold combined with junior Ryan Kenney (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta Sperry HS) and graduate student David Stoffel (Luxembourg) to finish fifth of ten in the 4x400 relay (3:31.18).

In the 5000, junior Dan Hergott (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier HS) was seventh of 36 (15:40.20) and sophomore Ben Edwards (Morristown, N.J./Morristown HS) was 15th (16:06.26).

Freshman Tristan Cronin (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield HS), in his first career outdoor meet, was 14th of 47 in the 200 (23.32) and 17th of 41 in the 400 (51.50).

Senior Beau Kraft (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) was 10th of 24 in the shot put (44'5.5") and 12th of 26 in the discus (129'3"). Both of those distances rank third on the NE10 performance list. Also in the shot, junior Michael Carpino (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield HS) improved on his best by six inches with his throw of 40'10.25" good for 13th place.

Next Saturday, Bentley will be in Springfield, Mass. for the American International Invitational.
