Powell Cited by Northeast-10 after Competing in Decathlon at UMass

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University freshman Matt Powell (Charlton/St. John's Shrewsbury) has been named the Men's Field Rookie of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference after his effort in the decathlon out at the University of Massachusetts.

Powell finished fourth of six in the meet, with a score of 4,943 points, while competing in his first career decathlon during the UMass Multis Thursday and Friday. He had the meet's best performance in the long jump (20'3") and established collegiate PRs in every event.

Powell's times in the running events were 12.07 seconds in the 100 meters, 54.68 in the 400 and 5:04.88 in the 1500. He finished the 110 meter hurdles in 17.41 seconds and cleared 5'10.75" in the high jump and 9'4.25" in the pole vault. In addition, Powell posted distances of 27'5.5" in the shot, 71'11 in the discus and 101'5" in the javelin.

It was the third multi-event meet this year for Powell, who competed in the heptathlon twice during the indoor season, including a tenth-place finish in the New Englands.

Also recognized by the Northeast-10 this week, with selection to the Weekly Honor Roll, were juniors Steve Maffiolini (Southington, Conn./Southington HS) and Brynnan Farrington (Shirley/Ayer HS).

During the Sean Collier Memorial Invitational at MIT, Maffiolini finished second of 29 in the 400 meters with his time of 49.84 seconds a PR by 0.77 seconds. It also ranked ninth on the NE-10 performance list. Maffiolini also was 14th of 46 in the 200 (23.02) and part of Bentley's 4x100 relay team that was fourth in 44.55 seconds.

In the same meet, Farrington established a new PR by throwing the shot 38'6.75". That put her at number five on the NE-10 performance list and fourth of 17 in the meet.

This weekend, Bentley will compete in the Stonehill Invitational Friday night and the Regis Invitational on Saturday.
