Strong Posts Winning Effort in Triple Jump during Corsair Classic

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Competing in the outdoor triple jump for the first time as a collegian, Bentley University sophomore Anthony Strong (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus HS) turned in a winning effort in the event while competing in the Corsair Men's Track and Field Classic Saturday at UMass-Dartmouth.

Strong posted a distance of 43 feet, 5.75 inches to finish first, 11 inches ahead of runner-up Adam Jones of UMass-Dartmouth. That performance moved Strong to seventh on Bentley's all-time list.

Bentley had four other top three finishes during the meet, including senior Conor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) in the 800. He was second of 88 with his time of 1:58.86 just 0.44 seconds off the winning pace.

Freshman Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS) was third of 84 in the 1500 (4:07.03) and the Falcons also received third place finishes by freshman Andrew McCluskey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) and junior Chris Ricci (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS). McCluskey was third of ten in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:32.65) and Ricci was third of 41 in the javelin, with his throw of 177 feet, 3 inches a new PR and good for ninth place on Bentley's all-time list.

Bentley had six of the top 15 finishers in the long jump with the list headed by junior Anthony Charter (Hubbardston/Quabbin Reg.  HS), sophomore Edy-Elliot Uthman-Olukokun (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick HS), sophomore Conor Hichens (Sharon/Sharon HS) and Strong. Charter was fourth (20'10"), Uthman fifth (20'7.75"), Hichens sixth (20'7.75" to set a new personal best) and Strong tenth (19'6.75").

Uthman also helped Bentley finish fourth of 16 in the 4x100 relay, combining with Hichens, freshman Matt Powell (Charlton/St. John's HS) and junior Steve Maffiolini (Southington, Conn./ Southington HS) for a time of 44.11 seconds. In addition, Uthman was sixth of 69 in the 100 (11.22), and Maffiolini was seventh of 56 in the 400 (51.61), as well as 14th of 85 in the 200 (23.26). Powell cleared five feet, seven inches in the high jump to place seventh out of 16.

Junior Mac Segura-Cook (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) and freshman Eric Alatalo (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 10,000 meters, each finishing in a little more than 34 minutes.

Junior John Chiulli (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook HS) was eighth of 49 in the discus (129'5") as well as 13th of 50 in the shot (39'9.75"). Classmate Christian Connolly (Kingston/Silver Lake Regional) set a new PR in the 1500, placing ninth of 84 in 4:10.86.

As a team, Bentley amassed 73 points to place fourth among 21 teams.

The team's next competition is the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Invitational next Saturday in Durham, N.H.
