Vatti Top Performer for Bentley Men in New Englands

BOSTON, Mass. – Posting a season-best time that elevated her to number nine on the NCAA Division II performance list, Bentley University junior Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills JHS) ran to victory in the 800 meters Saturday afternoon at the New England Intercollegiate Women's Track and Field Championships.

Varsell posted a time of 2:12.16 to best runner-up MJ Ohoueu of American International by about three-and-a-quarter seconds.

According to coach Kevin Curtin, Varsell took the lead about 300 meters into the race and wasn't challenged, steadily increasing her lead. Varsell's efforts enabled the Falcons to tie for 19th in the team standings.

The two-time All-America also helped Bentley set a school record in the 4x400 relay, combining with freshman Vanessa Wegner (Westborough/Westborough HS), sophomore Christine Smith (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) and senior Natalie Caldwell (Greenbrae, Calif./Redwood HS) for a time of 4:03.06.  The quartet finished 19th and broke a school record that had stood since 2003 by 0.31 seconds.

The highest finish for a member of the Bentley men was recorded by senior Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton HS), who was ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.34 seconds.

Junior Craig Robinson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS) placed 12th in the 3,000 meters, with his time of 8:32.58 a PR by about three seconds. Sophomore Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./ Inglemoor HS) also set a PR in the 3,000, her time of 10:29.17 good for 21st place.

In the mile, junior Curtis Trueb (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester HS) moved to number 24 on the Division II performance list by running the mile in a season-best 4:11.44.  He finished 17th overall in the race.

The Bentley men's team posted its best times of the season in the two relays it participated in, with the 4x800 having the highest finish. The Falcons were 15th in that one with the juniors Jordan Parkinson (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth HS) and Rob Hennessy (North Andover/North Andover HS) combining with sophomores Brendan Colford (Epping, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Connor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) for a time of 7:53.27.

In the 4x400, freshmen Mark Nelson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) and Steve Maffiolini (Southington, Conn./Southington HS) pairing with seniors Bryan Carton (Norwell/Norwell HS) and Andy Gauthier (Dracut/Central Catholic HS) to finish 19th in 3:23.03.
