Varsell & Vatti Lead Bentley Track during Day 1 of New Englands

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) and senior  Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton HS) were the top performers for Bentley University Friday at the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track and Field Championships at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center, with both advancing to Saturday's finals in their respective events.

Varsell was the number one qualifier among 30 competitors in the 800 meters, an event she earned All-America honors in a year ago. She finished in 2:12.88, more than two seconds faster than the number two qualifier, Frances Brillante of Rhode Island.  Saturday's final will be at 2:05 pm with the field of ten including four others from Northeast-10 Conference teams.

Vatti was the final qualifier in the 400 meters, edging out Twayne Forth of Southern Connecticut State by 0.39 seconds. He finished in 48.64 seconds, bettering his own PR by 0.13 seconds and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships. The finals are set for 1:15 pm.

Vatti also broke his own school record in the 200, although his time of 22.25 seconds, an improvement from the 22.41 he recorded two years ago, wasn't enough to advance. He placed 15th of 31 overall, with nine of the 14 in front of him Division I athletes.

Other new personal bests were achieved by junior Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex HS) in the 5,000 and sophomore Conor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) in the 1,000.

In the 1,000, junior Rob Hennessy (North Andover/North Andover HS) was 13th of 29 in 2:33.27, and Higgins' 2:34.46 put him 20th. Maguire was in the middle of 29 runners in the 5,000, finishing in 15:03.62, a PR by about 16 seconds.
