Bentley Set to Compete in Northeast-10 Track Championships This Weekend at Lowell

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bentley University men's and women's track teams will be at UMass-Lowell this Friday and Saturday for the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, which have been expanded to two days for the first time.

Ten Bentley athletes have top-six seed times, including sophomore All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS). She tops the entry list in the women's 800, an event she won during the indoor season, and has set a school record in the event each of the last two weeks. Varsell has a seed time of 2:11.52, achieved during indoors, and has a best outdoor time of 2:12.68, which came last week at the Stonehill Invitational.

Senior Steve Gendron (Lowell/Lowell HS), and junior Keisha Johnson (Randolph/Randolph HS) have the second best seed times in the men's 10,000 meters (32:23.28) and the women's triple jump (35'9.25"), respectively. Johnson, who was second in the triple jump last spring, is also listed 11th in the long jump (16'7").

The men's 10K projects to be a strong event for the Falcons. In addition to Gendron, sophomore Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex HS) and junior Gabe Campbell (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury HS) are listed fifth and sixth, respectively, on the seed list.

The women's 5,000 should be another solid event for Bentley. Junior Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam HS) is listed at number four and freshman Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) is fifth. Marrero finished second in the 10,000 last year and was the 2009 indoor champ in the 5000.

Other number four seeds for Bentley are junior Steven Long (Allston/Newton North HS) in the men's shot and sophomore Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) in the women's 1500. Long is also number seven in the discus.

Senior David Kusmin (Westwood/Westwood HS) is fifth on the seed list in the triple jump, and seventh in the long jump. Freshman Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS) is sixth in the women's shot and seventh in the javelin.

Other seventh seeds are freshman Aubrey Bazinger (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) in the discus, senior Tim Walant (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North HS) in the 110 hurdles and junior Dan Fava (Malden/ Malden Catholic HS).

The Bentley women finished fifth last year and the Falcon men were sixth. Both teams were sixth at the indoor championships

Action gets underway at 4:30 pm Friday and 11:30 am Saturday.
