Vatti, Long Post Victories for Bentley at Bridgewater State Bears Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Juniors Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) and Steven Long (Allston/ Newton North HS) both recorded victories on Saturday while competing for the Bentley University men's outdoor track team on a cold and windy day at the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational.

Vatti was a double-winner, capturing the 400 meters in 51.35 seconds and the 200 in 22.99. A total of 32 runners participated in the former and the Vatti was one of 41 who ran the 200.  In the latter, Bentley had three of the top four finishers with freshman Eric Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn./ Northwest Catholic HS) third (23.57) and sophomore Bryan Carton (Norwell/Norwell HS) fourth (23.60). Carton was also ninth of 32 in the 400, finishing in 53.95 seconds, and Kennedy recorded a fifth (out of 35) in the 100 meter dash (11.57 seconds).

Long's win came in the discus where his throw of 129 feet, seven inches was the best of 21 competitors. He was also fifth of 20 in the shot put (42 feet, 10.25 inches) and 13th of 21 in the javelin (133 feet). In the discus, Bentley also saw senior Marcus Chang (West Newton/Newton North HS) place sixth with a distance of 121 feet, seven inches.

Bentley dominated the 5000 meters with four of the top seven finishers in a field of 29. Heading the list was junior Tom Witherell (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos HS), who was third in 15:39.39, a personal best by 16 and a half seconds. Junior Gabe Campbell (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury HS), sophomore Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex HS) and senior Robby Ballenthin (Lexington/Lexington HS) followed in fifth, sixth and seventh. They finished in 15:59.10, 16:02.76 and 16:06.91, respectively.

In the 1500, freshman Conor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) was fourth in 4:18.94 and sophomore Rob Hennessy (North Andover/North Andover HS) followed in fifth, 0.16 seconds later.

Senior Dave Kusmin (Westwood/Westwood HS) was seventh of 21 in the triple jump, with a distance of 19 feet, 2.75 inches.

Sophomore Craig Robinson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS) ran for Bentley in the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State, and posted a time of 4:09.67. That placed him 51st of 92 in his section and 76th of 118 overall in the predominantly Division I meet.

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the American International Invitational.
