Long Claims School Record in Weight Throw During Reebok Boston Indoor Games

BOSTON, Mass. -- Bentley University junior Steven Long (Allston/Newton North HS) took possession of the school record in the 35 pound weight throw Friday night during the Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Long, with a throw of 41 feet, 3.25 inches, improved on the mark that former teammate Greg Brown posted a year ago during the Boston University Valentine's Invitational. Overall, he was 19th of 28 in the event. Long was also 15th of 31 in the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, six inches.

Bentley junior Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) had a strong performance in the 400 meters, winning his heat and placing sixth out of 42. His time of 50.93 seconds placed him behind runners from Hartford, Central Connecticut, Williams and Northeastern. Vatti was also 22nd of 63 in the 200, which he ran in 23.48 seconds.

In the 1000 meters, freshman Brandon Colford (Epping, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and sophomore Rob Hennessy (North Andover/North Andover HS) were 15th and 16th, respectively, in a field of 31. Colford finished in 2:35.79 and Hennessy followed in 2:36.08.

Senior Tim Walant (Nashua, N.H./Nashua HS North) and junior Jim O'Connor (Valatie, N.Y./ Ichabod Crane HS) were 14th and 16th, of 28, in the 55 meter hurdles. Walant posted a time of 8.16 seconds and O'Connor recorded an 8.33.

Bentley, with three points (all coming on Vatti's sixth-place finish), was 16th of 17 in the team standings.

Bentley will be in action again on Saturday, competing in the BU Terrier Classic.
