Bio

(left staff in December 2022)

The 2022-23 academic year will be Rick Edelmann's 10th as Bentley University's head men's and women's tennis coach.

Edelmann has led the men's program to the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs in all eight of his full seasons, with the only absence being when the 2019-20 season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He led the men's team to the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the program's first appearance since 2012. The men's team reached the NE10 Semifinals in each of his first six seasons in a row (2013-19).

He has guided them to an overall record of 95-75 and 40-28 in NE10 matches in nine seasons.

Edelmann has guided the women's team to the NE10 playoffs in 2014, 2017 and 2021. The women's team set a new program, single season record for wins with 15 in 2016-17 under his leadership, and they equalled that number again in 2017-18.

Edelmann has coached his student-athletes to 42 All-Conference selections from both the men's and women's teams during his time at Bentley. Both of his squads excel academically and are regularly among the most well represented teams on the ITA Scholar-Athlete teams and NE10 Academic Honor Roll.

Edelmann was announced as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Bentley on December 17, 2013 with a resume that included over 20 years of experience as an NCAA tennis coach. He came to Waltham after five-plus seasons as the head men's tennis coach at Division I Boston University.

His tenure at BU included being named the 2010-11 America East Coach of the Year. That season he led the Terriers to a four-win turnaround from the previous season and an appearance in the America East Tournament semifinals. Edelmann led BU to the America East semis in three of his five full seasons and a fourth-place finish in the 2009-10 campaign.

Prior to coaching at BU, Edelmann was the head coach of the men’s team at Amherst College for three seasons (2004-07), and the head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at NE10 rival Merrimack College for 11 seasons (1989-2000). At Amherst, he led the Lord Jeffs to three straight appearances in the round of 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament, while two of his players earned All-America honors. He was named the 2007 NESCAC Coach of the Year.

His tenure at Merrimack saw him earn NE10 Coach of the Year honors with the men’s team in 1992 and 1999 and with the women’s team in 1995.

Edelmann’s career in intercollegiate athletics has also seen him serve as the Director of Tennis at Florida Tech from January 2003 until July 2004, and at Merrimack from July 2000 until January 2003. He also served as an Assistant Director of Athletics at Merrimack during that time.

Edelmann has also been a member of various tennis committees throughout his career. Among them, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Division III Rankings Committee from 2006-2008, the NCAA Division II National Selection Committee from 1998-2003 and the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Rankings Committee.

A 1987 graduate of Saint Michael’s College, Edelmann played all four years for the Purple Knights and was their captain and team MVP as a senior. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Saint Michael’s.
