Samander & Fuca Lead Bentley to 8-1 Win over Stonehill

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior George Samander (Willemstad, Curacao) and junior Michael Fuca (Manchester, Mass./Manchester-Essex) each won in both singles and doubles to lead the Bentley men's tennis team to an 8-1 victory over Northeast-10 foe Stonehill on Thursday afternoon.

Bentley improved to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in NE10 matches with the victory.

Samander teamed with fellow senior Brendan McCarthy (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) for an 8-4 win in the No. 1 doubles match, while Fuca combined with junior Brett Gilman (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) for an 8-5 triumph in the No. 2 doubles match. Stonehill took the No. 3 doubles match by an 8-4 score, but Bentley led 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Falcons didn't let up in singles with a sweep of all six matches.

Samander claimed his second win of the afternoon by defeating Trent Newman in the No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-4. Fuca won for the second time by defeating Nik Lisichenok in the No. 5 match by a 6-2, 6-3 score.

McCarthy battled to a three set win over Thomas Bellio in the No. 1 match. Bellio won the first set 6-4, but McCarthy rallied and took the next two sets 6-4, 7-5. Junior Dylan Granat (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) got the better of Russell White in the No. 3 match 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Daniel Weitz (Roslyn, N.Y./Roslyn) rallied from a set down to win the No. 4 match 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, and fellow freshman Connor Aulson (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket) won his ninth singles match in a row by beating Aaron Diamond 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 match.

Following the win, the Falcons have the weekend off, but will return to the courts on April 3 when they host Southern New Hampshire.
