Bentley Completes Play at Quinnipiac Invitational Against Div. 1 Opposition
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Bentley men's tennis team competed at the Quinnipiac Invitational over the weekend for the second straight year, which featured tough competition in the form of seven Division I teams in addition to Bentley.
On Saturday the teams competed in four main singles tournaments, with flights A-D, and four consolation tournaments with the same flights.
Senior Andrew Waddington (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) was in the A flight for Bentley, and won his first round match over Hartford's Juan Molina 6-1, 6-3, before falling in the quarterfinals to Bryant's Dana Parziale 6-0, 6-3.
Sophomore Evan Chomka (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) won his first round match in the C flight over Sacred Heart's Luka Bagi 6-2, 6-3, but was beaten in the quarterfinals by UConn's Zac McEntee 6-4, 6-3.
Fellow sophomore Sam Frye (Redlands, Calif./Redlands) also won a first round match in the D flight over Sacred Heart's Alex Bosa 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 to advance to the quarterfinals. However he was forced to retire in his match against Villanova's Luis Miranda in the second set.
Doubles play got the action started on Friday with A and B flights, plus two consolation tournaments in the same flights. The team of Chomka and freshman Samuel Klau (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Robinson School) posted the only win for the Falcons in doubles with a victory in the B consolation tournament.
They got the better of Bosa and Ryan Wennberg of Sacred Heart in the first round 8-5, but fell to Quinnipiac's Alain Grullon and Luke Roser in the next round by a score of 8-1.
Bentley will now return to dual-match play over the weekend with its final two matches of the fall, both at home. Already boasting a 2-0 record, they'll look to go into the spring unbeaten when they host Le Moyne on Saturday and Saint Michael's on Sunday.
