Go Captures Gold During Opening Day of NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – Bentley University junior George Go (Manila, Philippines) captured his second career gold medal when he posted a victory in the 100 yard butterfly Friday night during the opening day of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

Go, who won the 100 backstroke last year, turned in a winning effort of 52.06 seconds in the 100 fly, winning by about a half-second over Daniel Oliveira of Keene State.

Four school records were broken Friday night in medal-winning performances. Freshman Josh Witty (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS) took second in the 200 backstroke, with his time of 1:55.24 breaking a mark from 2009 by 0.32 seconds. In a bronze-medal winning performance in the 500 freestyle, junior Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Reg. HS) lowered the school record from 4:48.03, set by Egen Ouellette three years ago, to 4:47.65.

The other two school records came in the 200 free relay with senior Joe Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Marcus Whitman HS) combining with sophomores Phillip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS), Peter Belanger (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) and Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) to place second in 1:25.92. That knocked 0.70 seconds off a record that had been in place since 2008, and Sylvia's opening split of 21.61 seconds broke the Bentley 50 free record by four-hundredths of a second.

Bentley was also a silver medalist in the 400 medley relay, with the quartet of Witty, freshman Connor Mulvey-Hudson (Ardmore, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), Go and Sylvia finishing in 3:32.17.

Mulvey-Hudson was also third in the 50 breaststroke (27.65), and Bentley received fourths from Chan in the 50 breast (27.96), Sylvia in the 50 free (21.75) and senior Patrick Ryan (Sudbury, Mass./ Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) in the 200 back (1:57.19).

Bentley finished the opening day of competition with 308 points with the Falcons trailing three-time defending champion Keene State by 47. Roger Williams is third amongst the 13 teams with 230.

The three-day meet resumes Saturday at 10 am and runs through Sunday evening.
