Bentley Men Conclude Northeast-10 Championships in Third Place

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bentley University Falcons finished third among seven teams in the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which concluded Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University.

Bentley, with a total of 566 points, finished behind Southern Connecticut, which amassed 934 points to claim its eighth NE-10 title in nine years, and The College of Saint Rose, with 705.5.

Bentley's top finisher during Saturday's competition was freshman Josh Witty (Los Gatos, Calif./ Los Gatos HS), who was fifth in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.73.

Junior George Go (Manila,Philippines) took sixth in the 200 butterfly (2:01.00) and sophomore Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) did the same in the 100 freestyle (48.84). Bentley's other finalists were juniors Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS), who was seventh in the 1650 free (17:27.16), and Mike Culkin (Avon, Conn./Avon HS), with a seventh in the 200 fly (2:04.04).

Bentley also earned a fifth in the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay with Go and Sylvia combining with sophomore Phillip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS) and senior Joe Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Marcus Whitman HS) for fifth place in 3:15.61.

Both of Bentley's gold medals in the meet were earned by senior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS), who swept the diving events with wins off the three-meter board Thursday and the one-meter Friday.

Next up for the Falcons are the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships. The diving portion will be at UMass-Dartmouth next weekend and the swimming events at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center in White River Junction, Vt. the following weekend.
