Go Earns Gold in 50 Backstroke; Bentley Men Place 2nd in NEISDA Championships

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -- Bentley University sophomore George Go (Manila, Philippines) swam to victory in the 50 yard backstroke on Sunday during the final day of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

Go touched the wall in 24.49 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than runner-up Pete Bue of Norwich. The gold was the third of the meet for the Falcons with Go joining teammates Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) in the one-meter diving and Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./ Conard HS) in the 50 butterfly.

The efforts of those three helped Bentley finished second in the 11-team meet. The Falcons, with 763.5 points, finished 238.5 points back of Keene State, which swam to its third straight championship. Roger Williams was third with 596.5.

Bentley's only silver of day three came in the meet finale, the 400 free relay. Freshman Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) swam the anchor leg with the quartet also including a trio of seniors competing as collegians for the final time: Ouellette, Chris Horan (Hanover/Boston College HS) and Matt Cesaro (Avon, Conn./Avon HS). Their time was 3:13.77.

Bentley received third-place finishes from freshman Phillip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS) in the 100 individual medley (56.97) and junior David Curran (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS) in the 50 back (25.76).

Cesaro was fourth in the 100 IM in 57.06, and junior Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) had a similar finish in the 1650 free (17:13.51).

Ouellette swam a time trial in the 50 freestyle, and broke Adam Lord's school record of 21.81 by 0.16 seconds. That gave him ownership of all six Bentley freestyle records, from 50 yards up to 1650.
