Bentley Finishes 3rd in Northeast-10 Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Bentley University Falcons finished third among seven teams in the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which concluded Sunday night at Southern Connecticut State University.

The defending champions finished the meet with 519 points and were nosed out of second place by the College of Saint Rose (546). Southern Connecticut took the team title with 812 points.

Bentley's highest finishes in the meet were a pair of seconds, both coming in diving events. On Friday afternoon, junior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) was the runner-up off the three-meter board, posting a score of 357.00. Senior Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) took second on the one-meter Saturday, achieving a score of 410.80, and Walsh was third with a 366.35.

In Sunday's action, Bentley registered three sixth-place finishes, two sevenths and two eighths. The sixths were achieved by junior Erik Strickler (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central HS) in the 1650 yard freestyle (17:25.27), sophomore George Go (Manila, Philippines) in the 200 butterfly (2:03.37) and the 400 free relay team of senior Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS), sophomore Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Reg. HS) and freshmen Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) and Philip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS). They had a time of 3:15.48.

Sylvia, in the 100 free (48.88), and sophomore Mike Culkin (Avon, Conn./Avon HS), in the 200 fly (2:04.24), both registered seventh-place finishes. Also qualifying for the finals and finishing eighth were Champagne in the 1650 free (17:36.52) and Ouellette in the 200 fly (2:04.68).

The final meet of the season for Bentley will be the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships. The diving events will be hosted by Bentley next weekend and the swimming events will be in White River Junction, Vt. Feb. 18-20.
