Stewart Scores but Bentley Falls to Southern Conn 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Bentley forward Julian Stewart (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) scored his third goal of the season, but Southern Connecticut scored late to take a 2-1 victory over the visiting Falcons on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on a goal by Southern Conn freshman Daniel Utgaard, who headed in a corner kick in the six yard box that came from midfielder Ignasi Cereois from the left corner.

Bentley though answered back just five minutes later with Stewart's third goal of the season. Colby Gould (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) and Nick Halliday (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton High) worked a give and go after a throw-in by Gould. Halliday then sent in a cross from the deep right wing that Stewart rose up for from just outside the six yard box to head over Southern Conn keeper Jake Davis for the goal.

With the score now 1-1, the teams battled for the next 53 plus minutes of game time in search of the winning goal. It ended up going the Owls' way in the 89th minute, as a shot from Francisco Martin took a deflection and went in following a run from the midpoint of the field by Devante Teixeira.

Southern Conn then saw out the final seconds to hang on, to improve its record to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 NE10, while the Falcons drop to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2 NE10.

Bentley will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they host Merrimack at 3:30, which will be a rematch of last season's NE10 championship match.
