Sullivan’s OT Goal Puts Bentley Past New Haven 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior forward Sean Sullivan (Suffield, Conn./Suffield HS) scored with just seven seconds left in the first overtime to give the Bentley University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over New Haven on Tuesday afternoon.

Sullivan's goal came just before the first overtime was about to expire. A long ball was played in the penalty box that saw several players go after it. Sullivan beat New Haven keeper Stefano Lorusso to it, and lifted a header into the back of the net to give the Falcons the win. The goal was his team leading 6th of the season.

Before overtime, Bentley had two excellent chances to win it late on. In the 88th minute, co-captain Forrest Scaringe (Cohoes, N.Y./CBA) had a half-volley in the six-yard box denied by Lorusso. On the same possession, freshman Charlie Lopez (Madrid, Spain) had a header on the near post denied by Lorusso, after a corner kick by Diego Lombardi (Guatemala City, Guatemala).

Lombardi had a chance earlier in the 2nd half to put Bentley in front as he chased down a ball played over the top of the New Haven defense, but a charging Lorusso denied his shot.

Bentley finished the day with eight shots on goal, led by two each from Sullivan and Scaringe. The Falcons limited New Haven to just one shot on goal.

Junior Liam McCarthy (Northborough/Algonquin Regional HS) earned the start in goal for Bentley, and picked up the win.

The Falcons will close out the regular season on Friday at AIC. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
