Bentley Wins 3rd Straight, 2-1 Over Southern Conn

WALTHAM, Mass. – A 2nd half goal by Nick Hoffman (East Brookfield, Mass./Quabbin) and a late save by goalkeeper Jack Blatchford (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) paved the way for the Bentley men's soccer team to defeat Southern Conn St 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon for its 3rd straight win.

With the Falcons leading 1-0 after halftime, Hoffman put Bentley in front in the 51st minute with his 4th goal of the season. A ball into the penalty area was taken by Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y./Albany), whose shot on net hit the post. Hoffman fought off his marker and headed in the rebound to give Bentley a two goal cushion.

The Owls got back in it with a goal from forward Chae Brangman in the 70th minute to make it 2-1.

But Blatchford prevented the tying goal late on with a diving save. In the 83rd minute, midfielder Weens Simon chipped a shot on goal from 30 yards away that was headed for the upper left corner of the net, only a full-body extension save by Blatchford prevented the goal as his hand batted the ball away.

Bentley was then able to run out the clock for its third win in a row and fourth in five matches. They improve to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10.

Earlier, senior Scott Levy's (Canton, Mass./Canton) third goal of the season gave Bentley a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Hoffman was involved again, making a run down the left wing and playing the ball off to Levy. Once in possession Levy dribbled into the box, turned and fired a shot to the far post from six yards away.

The Owls had the best scoring chance early on from forward Louis Tambini, but his shot on goal in the 4th minute was cleared off the line by Brett Ripperger (Westfield, N.J./Westfield).

The Falcons will go for their fourth straight win on Friday when they host Saint Anselm.
