Adelphi Tops Bentley 1-0 as First Half Goal Stands Up

WALTHAM, Mass. – Adelphi sophomore Toni Soler scored a 24th minute goal, and it stood up the rest of the way as the visiting Panthers took a 1-0 victory over the Bentley men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon.

The goal after a run down the right wing from senior Shane McLaughlin, who crossed the ball into the six-yard box. Soler ran on to it and just got his foot on the ball to direct it into the net to give them a 1-0 lead.

Adelphi nearly made it 2-0 in the 77th minute if not for two tremendous saves by the Bentley defense. Freshman James Thristino had an open shot on net that was blocked by the Falcon defense before it crossed the line. The rebound went back to Thristino who had another go on an open net, only it was blocked again.

Bentley's best chance to score came in the 83rd minute when a free kick by midfielder Jose Tirado (Lima, Peru) went just wide of the far post after striking it from 30 yards from the left wing.

Bentley drops to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers improve to 5-2-1 and 4-1 in the NE-10. Bentley is back in action on Saturday when they visit Saint Rose.
