Ryan’s Early Goal Sends Bentley Past Saint Rose 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y.) scored a 10th minute goal as the Bentley men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory over Saint Rose at home in Northeast-10 action Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (1-3-1, 1-1-1) pick up their first NE-10 win of the season and all three points after drawing with No. 18 Merrimack 2-2 on Tuesday. The Golden Knights (1-3-1, 1-1) are now even on the season in conference matches.

Midfielder Nick Hoffman (East Brookfield, Mass.) set the goal up with a beautiful cross into the six-yard box from the left wing. Ryan was there to volley it into the top of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Bentley nearly made it 2-0 in the 29th minute when Scott Levy (Canton, Mass.) hit the crossbar off a free kick. The Falcons had two other good scoring chances in the second half. A cross from the left wing into the box by freshman Chuck Leone (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) just eluded Levy's foot. In the 57th minute, Hoffman had an open look on goal after good buildup play from Ryan, only for his shot to be saved by Saint Rose keeper Colan Blackwell.

Saint Rose threatened twice in the game's waning moments. A shot by junior Nick Iuorno in the 84th minute was cleared off the line by the Bentley defense. In the 90th minute, a header by sophomore Tyler Casavant off a corner kick was cleared away by the Bentley defense.

Following today's win, Bentley is on the road for its next match. They'll face rival Stonehill Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
