NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – A 49th minute goal by Caldwell's Steve Petrosino was enough to see the Cougars past the Bentley men's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in the second match of the season-opening Marriott Kickoff Classic.
Though Bentley outshot Caldwell, out of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, 14-7 and 6-4 in shots on goal, Petrosino's goal was enough to give them the victory.
Petrosino's goal was headed in off a corner kick, delivered by freshman Simon Ekman, to give them the lead a little over three minutes after halftime.
Caldwell junior goalie Michael Hartmann stopped all six Bentley shots on goal, including four in the second half. Junior Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y./Albany) and freshman Sean Sullivan (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) led the Falcon attack with two shots on goal each.
The teams were even in corner kicks at four each.
Caldwell finishes the Kickoff Classic at 1-1 after dropping its opening match, while the Falcons fall to 0-2. They'll look to get into the win column on Wednesday afternoon when they host New York Tech in a non-conference match set for 3:30 pm.
