First Half Scoring Spree Lifts Bentley Past Saint Anselm 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley scored three first half goals on its way to a 3-1 victory over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 men's soccer Tuesday afternoon. The win clinches a spot in the Northeast-10 playoffs for Bentley for a sixth straight season.

The Falcons improve to 7-5 in Northeast-10 matches, giving them 21 points with one match remaining, which is Friday afternoon at New Haven. Currently in a tie for fifth, Bentley can claim a home match in the first round with a win Friday, and Southern Connecticut (22 points) getting only one point from its final two matches, and Franklin Pierce (21 points) getting three points or less from its final two matches.

Bentley got off to a fast start, with goals from junior Andrew Fenn (Fort Collins, Co./Rocky Mountain) and sophomore Nick Hoffman (East Brookfield, Mass./Quabbin) in the first 17 minutes. Freshman Jose Tirado (Lima, Peru/FDR) added a third goal for Bentley in the 40th minute.

Fenn's goal, his first of the season, came off a corner kick in the 12th minute. Freshman Forrest Scaringe (Cohoes, N.Y./CBA) sent the kick in from the right side of the field, and Fenn headed it in from the edge of the six-yard box to give Bentley a 1-0 lead.

In the 17th minute it was Hoffman and sophomore Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y./Albany) linking up for the goal. Ryan chipped a pass in to the penalty box that Hoffman latched on to, setting him up to fire a shot from 10 yards out that went into the corner of the net and past the outstretched arms of goalie Mark Kotsopoulos. The assist was Ryan's ninth of the season.

Tirado added his second goal of the campaign in the 40th minute to give Bentley a 3-0 lead after he struck home a loose ball in the box from eight yards out.

Saint Anselm got back in the match with a goal from senior George Lamptey in the 76th minute, but the Hawks did not threaten the rest of the way.

Friday's match at New Haven will kick off at 3:00 pm.
