Bentley, No. 9 Post Battle to 1-1 Tie

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University and No. 9 Post University battled to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y./Albany) had the goal for the Falcons.

Ryan, who entered the afternoon tied for second nationally in assists with eight, scored a 36th minute goal to put the Falcons in front, his second goal of the season. However, a 75th minute penalty kick goal by the Eagles' Joe Baccielo tied things up at one.

As the match wore on and got more physical, 32 combined fouls were called, scoring chances became scarcer and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. It's Bentley's first tie of the season, and its record goes to 7-4-1. Post, which entered the day on an eight-match winning streak, goes to 10-1-1.

Post had a number of chances in the early going, including a wide-open shot just 30 seconds in by Baccielo from inside the penalty area that went just wide. A shot in the 10th minute by Post's Jose Monterroza was headed for an open goal, but was stopped by the Bentley defense before going in. A shot in the 21st minute by Baccielo required a diving save to his left by Bentley keeper Jack Blatchford (Douglas, Mass./Douglas), who played a strong game and had four saves on the afternoon.

But as the half wore on Bentley settled in and gained more possession. The goal came as an attempted clearance by Post deep in its own end was blocked by Ryan. Ryan gained possession of the ball in the penalty area and fired a shot on net from eight yards that deflected in off a Post player, to give Bentley a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute.

The Eagles though turned things around in the second half, possessing the ball more and taking a number of shots, though Bentley's defense made them take most of their shots from long distance. Post then started to threaten the box more, and a foul inside the area resulted in a penalty kick for Post, which Baccielo converted in the 75th minute to tie the score.

Bentley's next match will come against another nationally ranked team, No. 14 Southern New Hampshire next Tuesday night in Manchester at 7:00 pm.
