M. Kahn’s Late Goal Sends Bentley to 2-1 OT Win over Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Michael Kahn (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) scored with 13 seconds left in double overtime to give Bentley University a 2-1 victory over Assumption in Northeast-10 men's soccer Saturday afternoon.

With a tie looking likely in the match's waning moments, freshman Nicholas Italia (Rocky Hill, Conn./Northwest Catholic) gained control of the ball in midfield for one last attack. With the ball on the right wing and Kahn making a run down the center of the field, Italia chipped Kahn a pass that got him in front of the Assumption defense for a breakaway on goal. Kahn then unleashed a 25 yard strike that beat Greyhounds goalie Dana King upper left for the goal to give Bentley all three points.

Prior to Kahn's goal, both teams had their chances in overtime. Senior Brennan DaCosta (San Diego, Calif./Westview) had three shots on goal in overtime after being brought on as a sub late in regulation, including a volley from 10 yards that hit the right post in the 107th minute. Assumption's Dom Mondi then had two good shots on goal but both were sent wide.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard first on a 13th minute strike by junior Cody Osgood (Harvard, Mass./The Bromfield School) that put the Falcons in front 1-0. At the top of the penalty area freshman Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y./Albany) fed Osgood a short pass. Osgood then had room to operate and got off a hard shot that beat King to the lower left.

A shot by Assumption's Max Roche in the 60th minute nearly tied the score, but Bentley goalie Alex Pilitsis (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) made a great diving save to his left to deny Roche's 25 yard shot.

The Greyhounds though did tie the score through a Bentley own goal in the 80th minute. Assumption senior Tom Carroll sent a cross in from the right wing, only for it to bounce in off a Bentley player positioned on the goal line.

Osgood had a great chance to give Bentley a late winner in the 86th minute after a ball over the top of the Assumption defense gave him an open shot, but he pushed it just wide to the right with King coming out to challenge.

Bentley improves to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-4 and 1-3 in the conference. Bentley's next match is Tuesday night at No. 12 UMass-Lowell.
