Bentley Rallies for 2-2 Tie with Saint Michael’s

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite falling behind 2-0, the Bentley men's soccer team was able to rally on the strength of two second half goals and earn a 2-2 draw with Saint Michael's on Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 match.

A 55th minute penalty kick goal by senior captain Weston Zeiner (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and a 59th minute goal by senior Matthew Leibowitz (Holliston, Mass./Worcester Academy) evened the score at two, but those would be the last goals of the game.

The Falcons had to play the final 14-plus minutes of the match with 10-men after a red card in the 96th minute for a foul on a Saint Michael's player that had a clear path to the goal, but the Purple Knights were unable to breakdown the shorthanded Falcons for the winning goal in overtime.

The visitors started strongly with a 7th minute goal from junior Josh Vlasich, his league leading seventh of the season on a bullet of a shot from 15 yards out.

The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half, but shortly after the break the Purple Knights went up 2-0 when Vlasich set up sophomore O.J. Rivas for a goal in the 47th minute. Vlasich sent a cross into the box from the left wing that Rivas headed in from the edge of the six yard box.

But not long after Rivas' goal Bentley started its come back, with freshman Marty Ryan (Albany, N.Y./Albany) winning his team a penalty kick after he was taken down in the box. Zeiner was called on to take the kick, and he drilled it into the back of the net to make it 2-1 in the 55th minute.

Less than four minutes later it was Leibowitz tying the match at two after he knocked in Michael Kahn's (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) cross that was sent in from the left wing.

Bentley, now 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NE-10, hosts Assumption on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for its next match.
