Haggan’s 18 Saves Helps Bentley Knock Off Saint Michael’s 12-5

Waltham, Mass. – Junior goalie Mike Haggan (Braintree, Mass./BC High) made 18 saves to help the Bentley men's lacrosse team defeat Saint Michael's 12-5 on Saturday.

The Falcons (6-2, 4-2 NE10) have now won three straight games after today's victory.

Haggan bested his previous season high of 16 saves, as he stopped 18 of 20 shots faced today for a 90.0 percent save percentage, a season high as well.

Bentley led from start to finish as a goal by sophomore Connor Baughan (Foxborough, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey) gave them a 1-0 lead 4:29 into the game. Following Baughan's goal, Bentley reeled off five goals in a span of less than six minutes. Starting with senior Alex Astarita's (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) goal at the 8:38 mark, Bentley jumped out to a big lead that they would not come close to relinquishing.

Michael Fricke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor) followed Astarita's goal 1:20 later, and 1:16 after Fricke's goal, junior Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Phillips Exeter) found the back of the net for a 4-0 lead. Freshman Ryan Birch (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Kris Campbell (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) closed the run with goals at 4:36 and 2:51.

Saint Michael's got on the board with a goal by Jon Lockwood 2:21 into the 2nd quarter, but that was quickly answered by a goal from Fricke, assisted by Dom Cioffi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) 1:25 later. Campbell and Brooks netted goals in the final two minutes as Bentley took a 9-1 lead into halftime.

Meanwhile Haggan had 9 stops at the half with just one goal allowed.

The Falcons started the 3rd quarter strongly with goals by seniors Sam Hurley (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) and Scott Carvalho (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) inside the first 2:54 for an 11-1 lead.

Haggan made five saves in the 3rd quarter and four saves in the 4th quarter before he gave way to senior Sean Bennett (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), who made four saves.

Sophomore Matt Mulcahy (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) led the Bentley defense with three caused turnovers.

The Falcons next head into a big week which sees them visit Assumption on Wednesday night and host Saint Anselm next Saturday.
