Balanced Effort Sees Bentley Top Roberts Wesleyan 12-8

Waltham, Mass. – Bentley men's lacrosse improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 12-8 victory over Roberts Wesleyan in its home opener on Saturday.

Senior Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) led a balanced attack with three goals, while Sam Hurley (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Philips Exeter) each had two goals.

Goalie Mike Haggan (Braintree, Mass./BC High) had a big game with 12 saves.

After Bentley led 2-1 after the first 15 minutes, they extended its lead out to 6-3 at halftime with a four goal second quarter. Astarita scored with just one second left before the half after a clear down the field by Haggan gave him a shot on goal just before the buzzer.

Bentley then scored three straight goals in the 3rd quarter, with the tallies coming from Matt Mulcahy (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor), Brooks with a man-up goal, and freshman Ryan Birch (Walpole, Mass./Walpole). Birch's goal with 2:29 left in the quarter gave Bentley a 9-3 lead, though RWU crept back in with two goals in the final 18 seconds of the period to cut the lead to 9-5.

That's as small as the lead would get the rest of the way, however. Hurley scored 1:24 into the 4th quarter, and another goal by Astarita at the 5:48 mark made it 11-5.

Sophomore Connor Baughn (Foxborough, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey) led the defensive efforts with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.

With two wins to start the season, Bentley will now begin its NE10 schedule on Wednesday, when they travel to Le Moyne for a 3:00 pm game.
