Sanford Scores Five Goals, but Bentley Falls to SNHU 15-10

MANCHESTER, Mass. – Senior Matt Sanford (Stratham, N.H./Bow) scored a career high five goals, but Bentley fell to Southern New Hampshire 15-10 on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse action.

Sanford scored twice in the first half and three times in the second half, but it wasn't enough to help the Falcons overcome a balanced Penmen attack which had 11 players score its 15 goals, led by a hat trick by Joseph Mayernick.

The Penmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter which Bentley was never really able to overcome. Sanford scored the team's first goal at the 2:03 mark of the opening quarter.

Consecutive goals by Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Philips Exeter) and Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) got Bentley to within 5-3 at the 10:44 mark of the second quarter. But the Penmen responded with a 3-0 run, before an unassisted goal by Sanford with 18 seconds left before halftime made the score 8-4 for SNHU at the break.

Sanford netted a man-up goal at 10:36 of the 3rd period for Bentley's only goal of that period.

The Falcons had their strongest period in the fourth quarter with five goals, but the Penmen matched it with five goals of their own. Sanford had two of the goals, and Timmy Day (Westfield, N.J./St. Joseph's), Cam Christensen (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Owen Hunter (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) each had one goal.

Bentley, which dropped to 1-4 in the the NE10, will be back on the field on Saturday when they visit Saint Michael's.
