Bentley Falls on the Road to So. New Hampshire 8-7

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire's Cameron Joyce scored the deciding goal with 5:03 left in the fourth quarter as the Penmen upended visiting Bentley by an 8-7 score in a Northeast-10 men's lacrosse game on Wednesday night.

In a back-and-forth game with four lead changes, neither team led by more than two goals. Bentley erased a 7-5 deficit with fourth quarter goals by David Phelps (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) and Mike Carter (Walpole, Mass./Thayer Academy), but Joyce's goal was the game-winner for the Penmen.

Bentley led 3-2 after the first quarter, but endured a long scoring draught that lasted well into the third quarter and allowed Southern to take a 5-3 lead. The Falcons finally ended the drought with a goal from sophomore attack Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) with 4:41 left in the third, followed by a man-up goal from junior Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) at the 3:08 mark to tie the score.

Southern though responded with two straight goals of its own, coming from junior Corey Allen at 2:55 and Joyce at 1:03 to give them a 7-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Phelps notched his second goal of the night at the 12:33 mark of the fourth to pull Bentley to within 7-6, and Carter's sixth goal of the season with 9:22 to play tied things up. However, Joyce put the Penmen in front 8-7 just before the clock hit 5:00, and Bentley did not have an answer.

The defeat drops Bentley's records to 6-5 overall and 6-3 in the NE-10, while Southern New Hampshire improves to 5-6 overall and 5-4 NE-10. The Falcons will look to get back in the win column on Saturday night when they host Franklin Pierce on Senior Night. Game time is 7:00 pm.
