Dimond's OT Goal Completes Bentley's Comeback in 8-7 Victory over Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Cutler Dimond (Marblehead, Mass./Tabor Academy) scored 34 seconds into overtime to give Bentley University a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse.

Bentley led 7-6 after rallying from 5-1 down in the third quarter, but Assumption's Ian Mack scored the tying goal with just .2 seconds left in regulation on a diving shot to send the game in OT. At the start of the extra-session, Bentley's Connor Price (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) won the face-off with Tim Cobb (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) getting the ground ball. Dimond found himself in possession near the goal after that sequence, made a move around his defender and shot past Assumption goalie Will Contento to give Bentley the win.

Assumption kept Bentley's offense in check throughout the first half and took advantage of its opportunities on offense to take a 5-1 lead at the 11:38 mark of the third quarter after a goal by midfielder Peter Gersbeck.

But following that goal Bentley began to chip away the rest of the quarter with two goals by junior attack Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading). He first goal came just over a minute after Gersbeck's, and his second didn't come until there was just six seconds remaining in the quarter, making the score 5-3.

Eight-plus minutes of the fourth quarter elapsed before another goal. But freshman David Phelps (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) found the back of the net at the 6:48 mark, setting off a 3-0 Falcons run that took just over two minutes. Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and Dimond each had goals during the run that put Bentley ahead 6-5 with 4:42 remaining.

But Assumption was able to finish strong. Gersbeck scored with 2:49 to play to tie the game 6-6, before Phelps' third goal of the day put Bentley back ahead with 2:13 remaining. Bentley stayed ahead 7-6 until Mack tied it just before the buzzer.

The victory sends Bentley's records to 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast-10. Assumption falls to 5-7 overall and 3-6 in the NE-10. The Falcons are back on the field Wednesday night at Southern New Hampshire.
