Goals in 4th by Caditz and Phelps Help Bentley Defeat AIC 8-6

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Fourth quarter goals by senior Steve Caditz (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and freshman David Phelps (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) helped the Bentley men's lacrosse team earn its first win of the season, 8-6 in the team's Northeast-10 opener Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons took a 6-2 lead into halftime on the strength of a first half hat trick by junior attack Cutler Dimond (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead). Dimond had two of the goals in the first quarter, to answer the opening goal scored by AIC junior attack Bobby Spano, giving Bentley a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.

Bentley struck four times in the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Brady Palmer (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) and Dimond had goals in the first 4:07 of the quarter to make it 4-1 for the Falcons. After a man-up goal for AIC by Spano, Bentley netted the final two goals of the half. They came from sophomore Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) at the 4:24 mark and Phelps at the 1:05 mark.

AIC though controlled the third quarter and all three of the goals scored in that frame went their way, including a man-up goal by freshman attack Justin Bard.

However, Bentley was able to halt AIC's momentum in the fourth quarter, and Caditz's goal with 7:20 left gave them a 7-5 lead. Just over a minute later it was Phelps scoring his second of the afternoon to make it 8-5. The Yellow Jackets scored with 1:47 left, but by then it was too late to come back.

Bentley senior goalie Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) made eight saves to pick up the win.

The Falcons improve to 1-2 on the season and go to 1-0 in the NE-10 after winning their first conference game of the season. They are back in action next Friday night when they host Le Moyne.
