Strong Finish Lifts No. 5 Dowling Past Bentley, 10-7

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Bentley University and No. 5 Dowling were tied 7-7 after three quarters, but the Golden Lions outscored the Falcons 3-0 in the fourth to take a 10-7 win in non-conference men's lacrosse play Sunday afternoon.

Dowling scored twice in a 16-second span to take a 9-7 lead midway through the fourth. The first 7:30 of the quarter was scoreless until senior PJ Nunez scored a man-down goal. Just 16 seconds later sophomore Luis Riley found the back of the net to give the hosts a two-goal lead.

With 5:50 remaining in the contest, freshman attack Joel Van Der Wal scored the final goal of the game.

After falling behind 1-0 early in the first Bentley had a strong finish to the opening quarter, scoring three times in 1:47. Junior J.D. Ayer (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) scored the first one, then just 33 seconds later senior Matt Boilard (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) netted a man-up goal to give Bentley a 2-1 lead. With 1:08 left, senior Zach Paz (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) scored his fourth of the year.

But Dowling stole some of the momentum back before the quarter ended, as senior Redmond Killpack scored with 51 seconds left.

Dowling scored the first two goals of the second quarter before senior Steve Murray (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) found the back of the net with 5:31 left to send the game into halftime tied 4-4.

In the third quarter, junior Dan Abbene gave the Golden Lions a 6-5 lead at the 5:55 mark, but Paz and Ayer scored two in a row for Bentley to give them a 7-6 advantage. However, Michael Brennen scored for Dowling right before the clock expired.

Junior goalie Ryan Dougherty made 14 saves for Dowling to earn the win.

Dowling improves to 8-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 3-4.

Bentley is back in action on Wednesday night at home against Southern New Hampshire.
