Bentley Falls to AIC 4-1 in Series Opener

Waltham, Mass. – Bentley and AIC met for the first time in over a year on Friday night, but it was the visiting Yellow Jackets that came away with a 4-1 victory over the Falcons at Bentley Arena.

All of the scoring came in the 2nd period, and it was a spurt of four combined goals in a span of less than two minutes that was the difference on the night.

Bentley scored first, off the stick of defenseman Matt Lombardozzi (Leominster, Mass.), for a 1-0 lead at the 7:23 mark. Freshman Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) dug the puck out of the corner in Bentley's offensive zone, and quickly fed Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.) who began to operate behind the net. Hamblet then threaded a pass to Lombardozzi on the point. The junior defenseman then had plenty of space to snap a wrist shot over the stick of AIC goaltender Stefano Durante for his first goal of the season

But the lead didn't last long. Almost immediately after the ensuing face-off, AIC's Martin Mellberg scored on a tough angle after the puck was played behind the Bentley net. That tied the game just nine seconds after Lombardozzi's goal.

The Yellow Jackets then scored twice just 20 seconds apart. Right wing Tobias Fladeby scored at 8:56, and at the 9:16 mark it was defenseman Parker Revering with the goal to give them a 3-1 lead.

Then with just under three minutes remaining in the period, defenseman Janis Jaks scored right off a face-off win in the offensive zone by Elijiah Barriga to give them a 4-1 lead.

Neither team would score in the 3rd period, despite Bentley owning a 12-5 edge in shots in the period. They had a 31-24 edge on the night.

Bentley will look to earn the series split when these two teams are back at it on Saturday at 4:05 pm.
