Waltham, Mass. – Bentley and Canisius played to a 3-3 tie at Bentley Arena on Friday night, but the Golden Griffins earned an extra point on the night by winning the first ever shootout at the Arena, in two rounds.

Both teams earned a point by getting to overtime and the game goes down officially as a tie. Neither team scored in the first five minute overtime, and neither team scored in the 3 on 3 five minute overtime to set the stage for the shootout.

Canisius won the in the second round of the shootout after Matt Hoover scored.

Bentley jumped out to a 1-0 lead 10:08 into the first period on sophomore Jakov Novak's (Windsor, Ontario) 13th goal of the season. Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) fed Novak in front for a one-timer and the Ottawa Senators draft pick buried it for his 4th goal in three games to give Bentley the lead.

Just 22 seconds after the goal, Canisius took a penalty for hooking and the Falcons cashed in for a power play goal from Santerno at 11:42 for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) had the puck above the left face-off circle and hit Novak with a cross-ice pass. Novak then quickly passed to Santerno in the slot, who beat Canisius goalie Jacob Barczewski top shelf for the goal.

A Canisius power play carried over the end of the 1st period into the 2nd period, but the Falcons turned the tables with a shorthanded goal by junior Brendan Hamblet (Hopkinton, Mass.) just 29 seconds into the period. With the puck along the boards in the Canisius offensive zone, Hamblet poked the puck loose and sprang ahead for a breakaway, which he finished off by beating Barczewski with a wrist shot to the stick side.

The goal was Hamblet's third shorthanded of the season and Bentley's sixth as a team.

Later in the period, Canisius converted a 5-on-3 opportunity for a goal at the 14:23 mark to cut Bentley's lead to 3-1 going into the 3rd period.

The Griffs got a goal early in the 3rd period off the stick of left wing Lee Lapid to cut the deficit to 3-2, 51 seconds into the period. The tying goal came from senior center Nick Hutchison at 13:17.

Neither team scored in the remainder of regulation, or 10 minutes of overtime to lead to the shootout. Bentley though had the best scoring chance of the 3 on 3 overtime when Santerno had a shot on the doorstep denied by a diving save by Barczewski.

These same two teams will be back at it tomorrow night at the Arena for a 7:05 puck drop.
